There’s one shmup level early on and one where the screen is scrolling. The game is pretty long, 8 levels, with most of the gunning & running levels having two sections and a boss fight (which themselves are comparably easy). You get the same weapons as in the original Contra but they are far more sluggish than usual and due to terrible sprite collision only hit enemies when you stand perfectly right and not when it looks like they should hit them from what happens on the screen. Your hitbox is massively larger than your sprite, often enemies or mines will kill when you’re not even close to them. The bigger problem here is though, that this isn’t a hack of the original Contra, instead, they seem to have developed their own engine which is really just terrible. Most hacks are terrible because the creator has played the original so much it feels too easy to him and he creates something “better” by making it harder, usually making a much worse game. While the game looks like a Contra hack, it’s actually not. I played it mostly because I saw the title screen hack on and wanted to check out what the game is about (also left a review there under another name). Super Contra X is a pirate card that uses some of the sprites from the original Contra (especially the main character sprite) with new background graphics and new monsters.
